Q: Tell us about yourself! Which city do you live in?
My name is Cedric, and I live in the Eastern Time Zone. My background is in software testing and test engineering, primarily dealing with SQL. In my free time, I enjoy working with 3D graphics, using programs like Blender. My passion for 3D graphics and visual aspects of programming led me to explore JavaScript and its potential applications in that area.
Q: Is this your first time learning to code?
This is my first time taking on coding seriously, but I had dabbled in coding before. I found that most resources, such as books and tutorials, were too focused on theory, which didn't excite me. I needed something more visual and practical to keep me engaged and motivated to learn coding.
Q: Why did you decide to learn coding?
I wanted to learn coding, particularly JavaScript, due to my interest in 3D graphics and gaming. I discovered that there were 3D frameworks for JavaScript like Babylon and Three.js, which could be used to make 3D games or graphics. However, I realized that I needed to have a solid understanding of JavaScript before diving into these frameworks. This desire to create visually stunning applications with coding led me to enroll in a bootcamp.
Q: How do you like coding so far?
So far, I've enjoyed the challenges that come with learning to code. There have been some roadblocks, but working through them has been a rewarding experience. One of the biggest challenges for me was cloning websites, as it required me to apply the knowledge I had learned from scratch. However, once I got the hang of it, the process became more manageable.
Q: How are you doing so far in the program?
I think I'm doing okay in the program. I've completed the HTML and CSS courses and have started JavaScript. The curriculum is not as intuitive as I had anticipated, but once you get the hang of it, it's okay. I believe that you have to do more on your own, and you can't just rely on the curriculum itself. I've run into a few roadblocks, but with persistence and practice, I've been able to overcome them.
Q: What are your goals?
My short-term goal is to finish the program before October, ideally by August. I would like to break into the field of 3D graphics and gaming using JavaScript. In the long run, I hope to work from home or even work remotely from any location. I'm also interested in offering freelance services for platforms like Shopify and WordPress once I become proficient in frontend development and Ruby on Rails.
Q: What advice do you have for beginners?
My advice for beginners is to code every day, even if it's just for an hour. If you encounter something you don't understand, practice it over and over again until it clicks. Stay consistent and don't give yourself a break, if possible. The more time and effort you put into learning, the better you'll become at coding.
Q: How has your experience been with Altcademy?
I chose Altcademy after researching various coding bootcamps and found it mentioned in a couple of articles. The self-paced nature of the program appealed to me, as it allowed me to stay in my own city and learn at my own pace. Additionally, the affordability of Altcademy compared to other bootcamps made it an even more attractive option for me. So far, I've been pleased with the support and resources provided by the program, and I'm excited to continue my coding journey.
