I have been learning to code for a little over a year now. I started with HTML and CSS, but I didn't really create any projects back then. I made a Google home page clone and then took a break from my degree (computer information and systems). I also know a little bit of C# and Java.
Q: Why did you decide to learn coding?
I decided to learn coding because the career path I was in did not pay enough to support a family. So, I decided to start looking into careers that do not need a lot of schools, since I was 24 at the time. I found that coding doesn't require a lot of schools to jump into it, and now I'm passionate about coding. Right now I am a stay home dad and I've always wanted to join bootcamps, but they're too expensive ($16-20k). So I searched online and found Altcademy. The curriculum has React and a lot of JavaScript and HTML & CSS.
Q: How are you doing so far in the program?
So far I'm doing great in the program. I'm working on JavaScript at the moment and it's going pretty well. My skills have increased a lot due to the hands-on projects. I tried learning JavaScript before but I gave up and decided to learn C# instead. However, I'm much more confident now after studying full-time (or as much as I can) on Altcademy.
Q: How do you like Altcademy?
I'm enjoying my experience at Altcademy. Some of the stuff is newer subjects that I have neither learned before. Bootstrap is new to me, as are some of the CSS aspects. I like the online setting and the ability to learn at my own pace. Daycare is really expensive in the USA, so being able to learn remotely is great because I also get to take care of my infant.
Q: What are your end goals?
I am currently looking for my first client, but also a full-time job as a front-end developer this fall. My wife is a nurse and we are looking for mainly remote jobs. I have found a lot of jobs on Indeed and LinkedIn. The job market for software developers and web developers looks very much in demand.
