Q: What’s your journey in learning to code?

I have thought about learning to code for a few years now, but I didn’t do much to act on it. I had done some research about coding before, but I didn’t actively pursue it as a career. I am currently employed by an airline company, and 2020 has fundamentally changed the airline industry. I’m fortunate to be still employed, but this is the perfect time for me to make the commitment to transition into a new career and so, I decided to begin my journey in learning how to code professionally.

Q: How’s your experience of coding so far?

This is the first time I’ve tried to learn to code. Before joining Altcademy, I had done some free intro coding classes, so I did have a basic understanding and expectations.

Several years ago, I wanted to design apps for mobile devices and I did some basic learning online as well. I’ve struggled in the past to learn on my own because if I had questions, you don’t know if you will ever get an answer. At Altcademy, the mentors are always there for you!

I like the creative aspect of coding. I especially enjoy it because I get to use my brainpower to get things done and ultimately earn money. I have worked in the retail sector, but it felt like a mindless job, and I don’t want to do it again.

I love learning online because it works great for me. My hours at work can be very odd, so in-person schools will be impossible. At Altcademy, I can learn at my own pace with a structured curriculum.

I have just finished the HTML&CSS course, and it really excites me that I can now look at a website and ask “can I build it?” or “how did they achieve that look?” I feel like I have learned so much, especially working through the final project. I think I am a lot more comfortable with HTML&CSS now.

Q: What are your future plans?

I know if I can finish this program and start my career in the tech industry, the entry-level salary will be significantly higher than the minimum wage and closer to what I am currently earning. Where I live, there are a lot of tech companies, so I’m lucky!

Interestingly, I think I am still the only one in my network who is learning to code. I think more people should do it!
