PostgreSQL is a relational database management system for storing and managing data. It is known for its reliability, and is popular for building mission critical applications used by financial services and large internet companies.

PostgreSQL stores data in categories called tables, such as authors or books. Each table contains rows and columns. Each row represents one data entry, such as "Leo Tolstoy" or "War and Peace". Each column holds an attribute belonging to an entry, such as "Country of Origin" or "Publish Year".

PostgreSQL was started as a project called POSTGRES at Berkeley University by a researcher called Michael Stonebraker, who won a Turing award for his work. Early POSTGRES had a proprietary programming language and interface. After the POSTGRES project ended in 1994, two Berkeley graduate students swapped the original programming language with one of SQL.

In 1996, PostgreSQL was officially released and is continuously maintained by a group of engineers called The PostgreSQL Global Development Group. The latest stable version is PostgreSQL v10.
